Making Eggs Benedict
I've always liked eggs Benedict, but I'd never really thought about making it myself, as I thought it would be too complicated and difficult on my own. For my C19 Project though, I thought I would look into how hard it actually is to make the dish, and then I decided to make it, and document the process.
I researched online to find the best recipes and tricks for poaching eggs and making hollandaise sauce. I figured out what I wanted, got the ingredients I needed, and started.
I set aside the English muffins and Canadian bacon and began making the hollandaise.
I started by juicing my lemon, then putting 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of dijon mustard, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and a pinch of cayenne into a small bowl. Then, I tolk the yolks of 3 eggs and put them in as well. After that, I poured the contents of the bowl into a blender, and blended the mix for 5 seconds.
Next, I melted a 1/2 cup of butter, and then slowly poured it in with the rest of the mix, while blending. With that, the hollandaise sauce was done. It was a little bit thick, but I figured it would work well when mixed the yolk of the poached eggs.
Moving on from the hollandaise, I warmed up the English muffin and Canadian bacon, and set them up on a plate.
The next thing to do was poaching the eggs, which was by far the hardest and most intimidating part. The first step was to bring a pot of water to a low boil, and break two eggs into small bowls. Then, I used a slotted spoon to spin the water and create a vortex in the center, which helps the egg form the classic poached shape. I let each egg cook for about 3 minutes.
Once each egg was cooked, I dried it off with a paper towel and put it them on their respective English muffin/Canadian bacon platforms. I poured the hollandaise sauce on each egg, and garnishes with a little bit of chopped parsley and more cayenne pepper.
With the final steps done, I sat down and enjoyed my creation. It was delicious.
All in all, I'm very happy with how much I learned through this project. I started with practically no knowledge of how to poach eggs, and create hollandaise sauce from scratch, but I did a bunch of research and figured out every step. I am glad that I was able to take something that I love but never really thought too hard about, and make it into something that I could master. I also hope that this project could help any others to try out making eggs Benedict as well.
